Patrick Read Johnson originally wrote the script for Dragonheart in the early 1990s. He submitted the script to Universal Pictures and received positive feedback. However, the studio felt that the script was not ready for production and went through several rewrites. 

In 1995, Johnson was replaced by director Rob Cohen, and the film finally went into production. Dennis Quaid was originally cast as Bowen but dropped out due to creative differences with Cohen.

Sean Connery was approached for the role but turned it down. The role eventually went to Jason Scott Lee. Cohen left the production after a few weeks and was replaced by director Peter MacDonald.
